Donovan stood before Amy’s desk, hoping he was sending valuable resources in the right direction. The link to Amy’s name was more than a coincidence. It hadn’t been easy, coming to that decision. Perhaps if Amy’s brother had been contactable, he might have thought differently. Damien may have spoken to Mandy, but that could have been a token visit to keep himself in the clear. CCTV was being checked for the appearance of a female companion, but that would take time. Amy had always said that Damien was a powder keg waiting to go off. He’d had a warped upbringing and harboured a grudge against his sister that spanned decades.

Perhaps they needed to look at Lillian, who could be living vicariously through her son. Either way, it was a lead worth chasing. Damien had sailed close to the wind before, with involvement in online Facebook groups which had harboured unsavoury sexual deviants in the past. Amy had investigated them all. The difficulty lay in directing the bulk of their resources towards catching Damien. The superintendent had warned Donovan not to be blinkered. Amy had worked on many high-profile cases during her career and was recently in the spotlight, starring in a fly-on-the-wall policing documentary. Any number of people could have been involved. But spreading the net wide in such a limited amount of time was a gamble. As far as Donovan was concerned, Damien was the main face in the frame. He had previous for sexual offences and had spent time in prison. His hatred for Amy was ill-concealed each time they met.

‘Gov, have you got a minute?’

Donovan snapped out of his thoughts, embarrassed to be caught staring mournfully at Amy’s desk. ‘Come in.’

He opened his window blinds and peered out at his team before returning his attention to Paddy. He’d had a change of clothes but little sleep, judging by his haggard face. His navy trousers were freshly pressed, most likely by Sally-Ann, and his navy-blue tie displayed tiny yellow ducks. Amy loved his novelty ties. Loves, he caught his inner thoughts, the ones he couldn’t yet bear to touch upon. They may be sharpening their knives, but she’s still alive.

Paddy rested a mug of coffee on Donovan’s desk. It was a James Bond mug, one of Amy’s favourites. ‘I thought you could do with this,’ he said, grim-faced.

‘Cheers.’ Donovan raised the mug to his lips. Paddy wasn’t the best at making it, but it tasted like nectar today.

Paddy fell into a thoughtful silence, change jingling in his pockets as he thrust his hands inside. ‘For what it’s worth, I think you’re right. Winter’s family is involved.’

‘Family? Not just Damien?’ Donovan rested the mug back on his desk.

Paddy nodded. ‘From what I’ve learned about Damien, he takes instruction from his mother. She’s the one pulling the strings.’

‘True,’ Donovan agreed. ‘And there’s no love lost between her and Amy. Lillian’s good at holding a grudge.’

He was aware of Lillian’s ability to hold on to things. She had kept the burial sites of some of their murder victims to herself for over thirty years.
